Norma Chandler-Smart, the daughter of Walter “Tito” and Iris Chandler was born in The Republic of Panama on January 2, 1931 and passed away in El Paso, Texas on October 16, 2019 after a brief illness. She attended Liceo De Senoritas Secondary School for girls and excelled academically. In 1954 she immigrated to the United States where she met the love of her life, Charles “Charley” Smart, a United States Army soldier, and fellow West Indian Panamanian, who was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Norma and Charley were married in 1956 and their son Greg was born in 1957. The Smart’s started their military life’s Journey and service to country at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Subsequently, they moved to many other stateside and overseas locations where Norma worked initially as a cashier and in varying entry to upper level management positions for the Post Exchange. Charley’s last duty assignment was Fort Bliss, Texas where Norma retired as a Branch Manager after more than twenty years of employment with the Army Post Exchange Branch. Norma was a resident of El Pl Paso, TX for forty three years and devoted member of “Christ the Savior Church,” who believed in faith, family, respect and goodness in all people. Her favorite extra- curricular activities were arts & crafts, swimming and being a dedicated volunteer for the Discovery Shop Thrift Store. Most importantly, Norma was also a devoted mother and supportive good friend to all. Norma Chandler-Smart, the last remaining Chandler, was predeceased by her husband, parents and two siblings and is survived by her devoted son, Greg, of El Paso, Texas. Norma will be missed by family, close friends, neighbors and co-workers who loved her dearly. May she rest in peace with family and her soulmate, Charley.
