He attended school in Birdseye, IN and served in the Army. He retired from PD&S Trucking. He married the love of his life, Margie, in February of 2008 and they enjoyed five wonderful years together. Jim loved making his rounds shopping each morning, going to the Owls, Eagles and doing yard work for anyone who needed his help. He attended Harwood Baptist Church and volunteered at the food bank. He did everything with a smile and a sense of humor.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. and Ruth (Smith) Atkins.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Penrod Cook Atkins of Evansville; sons, James Atkins, Jr. (Kim) of Ansonia, CT and Danny Atkins (Christi) of Lafayette, IN; daughter, Kellie Davis (KW) of Chrisney, IN; stepson, Jim Cook (Mary Sue) of Paducah, KY; stepdaughters, Brenda Woodward of Wadesville, IN and Cathie Cook of Evansville; sister, Charlotte Lucas (Forrest) of Indianapolis, IN; five granddaughters, Brittany Biggs-Davis, Brandie Wheeler and Justine, Kayla and Keri Atkins; three great-granddaughters; and two nephews, Morgan and Robert Lucas.
Services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Karl Crowe, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
