Marthagene Ware Johnson departed this life on March 18, 2019 at the age of 95 in Evansville, Indiana. Marthagene was born June 12, 1923 in Evansville, the daughter of Fred D. and Flora Sutter Ware. They preceded her in death. She married her high school sweetheart, Edwin W. Johnson, on August 25, 1942 before he left to fight in WWII in the South Pacific. While Edwin served overseas, Marthagene served our country working in the Evansville Shipyard. They were able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends before Edwin died February 15, 2002.
Marthagene graduated from Reitz High School and Evansville College (University of Evansville) where she was elected homecoming queen. She took post graduate classes at Purdue University and Indiana University. She was active as an adult in Evansville as a Girl Scout leader, teaching English as a Second Language through Willard Library, Evansville Museum, playing golf and playing bridge.
She is survived by her four children:
Edward W. (Debbie) Johnson of Evansville, IN and their four children and seven grandchildren.
Patricia J. (John) Harms of Springfield, IL and their three children and one grandchild.
Rodney D. (Pamela) Johnson of Portland, OR and their two children.
Susan M. (Stephen) Schoenbachler of Evansville, IN and their two children and one grandchild.
She was known for her outgoing personality, incredible vocabulary, her love of reading, and love of traveling. Marthagene will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was kind and always a lady.
She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church.
The family will celebrate the lives of both parents, Edwin W. Johnson and Marthagene Johnson, with a private family service at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Vanderburgh Humane Society or Simpson Methodist Church.
The family of Marthagene would like to thank the staff at Walnut Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center for their loving care of their mother and also thank Kindred Care Hospice for their support and care.
