Robert P. Riley MD
April 28, 1930 – July 5, 2019
Beloved husband of 60 years to the late Coletta (nee O'Brien); age 89; loving father of Robert F. (Melissa), Eileen Brady (Joseph), Nancy McBride (Owen), Peter M. (Julia), and Thomas J.; Grandfather of 14; Great Grandfather of 8; brother of the late James (Ruth) and Jack; uncle of many. Passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2019.
Dr. Riley was a dedicated physician and family man, committed to his profession, his patients and his family. He was a perpetual student and a passionate teacher, impacting so many with his skills and life lessons.
Born in Cleveland, Dr. Riley was proud to be from Kamm’s Corner. Bob was vice president of his senior class at Saint Ignatius High School, having also won a Blue and Gold Boxing championship and a writer for one of the school newspapers, the Blackeye. He went on to Saint Louis University where he obtained his undergraduate and medical school degrees.
Dr. Riley returned to Cleveland to start a surgical residency, which was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. He served as the ship’s surgeon on the USS Essex air craft carrier until 1957. He returned to Cleveland and started his general practice, going on to complete training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Riley was a founding member of the Kidney Foundation and pioneered the use of the artificial kidney dialysis machine on the west side of Cleveland.
He was admired for his generous and compassionate care of patients, and was awarded the "Pillar of Medicine" in 2006 by the Cleveland Clinic. He devoted 50 years to his medical practice and was a member of the medical staff at Lakewood Hospital, Fairview General Hospital, and St. John's Hospital.
Dr. Riley was a devoted and loving husband and father. He and Coletta enjoyed 60 years of marriage. In his free time, Bob played the piano, sailed, golfed and was an avid reader and gardener. He enjoyed spending time sharing a book he had enjoyed or playing duets on the piano with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bob was committed to his Catholic faith both in his personal and professional life. Dr. Riley left a lasting impression on many.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be forwarded to the Monastery of the Poor Clares. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, July 10, at 10 am in St. Angela Merici Church, 20820 Lorain Rd.
