Ralph Edward Stancil, loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2019, surrounded by family and loved ones after courageously living with Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis (ALS), a cruel and progressive neurodegenerative disease, for more than 4 ½ years. He was 69 years old.
Ralph was born in Arlington, Virginia on December 18, 1949 to Alonzo R. and Anna C. Stancill. He is survived by his older brother, R. L. Stancill and wife Rannette of Goldsboro, North Carolina; older sister, Carolyn A. Pillow and husband Doug of Deer Park, Texas; and older sister, Donna L. Mullins of Arlington, Virginia; and his dear friend, companion, and caregiver William R. Nicol, of Falls Church, Virginia. He loved each of his dear nephews and nieces, Robert, Patrick (Brian), Stacey, Natasha (Tash), Christa, David, and James. He adored his 11 grand nephews and nieces and 3 great nephews and nieces. He delighted in the many visits by all, and, especially, those by his 9- year old grand nephew, Matthew, who lived close by. Ralph enjoyed his energy, dancing, wit, joy, and most of all his hugs and kisses.
Ralph, a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia, grew up in Arlington and graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1968. He served in the United States Air Force from 1968-1972 with postings in Turkey and Hawaii and was discharged from service with the rank of Staff Sergeant, E-5. Ralph retired in December 2014 from the Office of Personnel Management after serving over 30 years as a human resources specialist and supervisor.
Ralph also enjoyed working on “do it yourself” projects, renovating much of his home before being diagnosed with ALS. He loved people, was kind and considerate to all who he knew and with whom he came in contact; a true friend, and avid storyteller, and family historian.
Ralph genuinely appreciated all care and love that he received from his doctors, nurses, therapists, home aide, and other medical personnel within whom he came into contact during the years he had ALS, and always thanked each person individually for being so “good to him.”
A courageous and good soul at all times.
His happy and jovial presence will be greatly missed by family and friends and he will always live in our memories and hearts. We know he is enjoying the paradise as promised by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in whom he strongly believed, and that we will meet again.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (KJV)
