Jane Annette Hanzel, 88 from Fort Myers, FL died Monday, September 17, 2018. Jane was born on April 3, 1930 in Dixon, Illinois to Catherine and Gerhardt Gibson. She graduated high school from Dixon Illinois and received a full scholarship to the University of Illinois. She met the love of her life, John at the University of Illinois and was married in 1950. Later in life she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Oakland University in Michigan.
She had many passions in her life, her most important being Faith, Family and Friends.
In living her Faith, she was a founder of two Charismatic prayer groups, one in Michigan and one in Florida, ministered to the sick through hospice, active in Parishes at St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Church of the Resurrection in Ft Myers, Florida. She was also a founder of the Rummage Sale at St. Hugo’s with proceeds going back to the school and various charities. She was president of Birthright, and active in Right to Life and a homeless shelter for St. Hugo. At age 85, she wrote an autobiography sharing her life story and many of her teachings. One of her main themes was to trust and listen to the Lord; and in doing so He will fill you with His peace and Joy.
With her Family and Friends, she celebrated life every day. She loved her children and grandchildren. She had many different social groups: her prayer groups, golf partners, bridge players and friends associated with her volunteer groups. She developed many friendships through her golf memberships at Stonycroft Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI and the Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, FL. She loved her vacations with her family and traveled extensively with John.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband John, her sister Anne and her infant son Jeffrey. She is survived by her four children, Janet Elizabeth of Onekama, Michigan, John Robert from Fort Myers, Florida, James David from Fort Myers, Florida and Joel Christopher and his wife Linda of Loveland, Ohio and seven grandchildren, Meredith, Molly, Kevin, Brogan, Colin, Jennifer and Lauren.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home on Friday, September 21st from 5 to 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 22nd at 9:30 AM at the Church of the Resurrection in Ft. Myers. A Luncheon will immediately follow at Lexington Country Club. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Hope Hospice of Ft. Myers or the Salvation Army.
