GEORGE H. MAYS, 74, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, after a long illness. Born Aug. 17,1938, in Middlesboro, Ky., he was a son of the late George R. and Ethel Mays. He joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school, serving four years as a heavy equipment mechanic. On Sept. 28, 1959, he married the love of his life, Shelby J. Shackels Mays; she survives. They began the lifelong adventure of raising a family. George worked at the B.F. Goodrich plant in Woodburn, retiring after 36 years to live a relaxed lifestyle pursuing his lifelong hobbies of tinkering on old cars, woodworking and passing on his incredible knowledge to his children and grandchildren. Also surviving are his children, Latisa (Scott) Guest of Greenfield, Ind., Steven (Sherry) Mays of Kendallville, Michael (Christine) Mays of New Haven, and Tammie Mays of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Jason and Philip Guest, Amber, Dylan and Chase Mays; great-grandson, Keaton Guest; soon to have a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Otsie Wilcox of Ilinois and Evelyn Dennis of Ohio; one brother, Joseph Mays of Ohio; as well as nieces, nephews and family members too numerous to list them all. He was also preceded in his journey to Heaven by his brothers, Clifford, Troy and Thomas. Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, with visitation one hour prior to service, at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells St. Visitation also 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery New Haven.
