Margaret was born in Troy, New York, in 1913. One of her earliest memories was watching the parade to celebrate the armistice ending World War I. She attended college during the depression and obtained a degree in Library Science from Albany Teachers College. Her first professional position was as a librarian at the New York City Public Library. She taught English for many years at the A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell and at Delaware Academy in Delhi.
Margaret’s home and heart were in Treadwell where she lived for 66 years from the time she married Robert Hazlett in 1939. She was active in the Treadwell Community Club, the Treadwell United Methodist Church, and the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Patricia Deyton and her husband, Edward, of Centerville, MA and Elizabeth Critchley and her husband Brian, of Chantilly, Virginia, and her loving daughter-in-law Katherine Dorn of Treadwell. Grandchildren are Barbara Minor, Robert Hazlett, Timothy Shirey, Penny DeSalle, Kelly Mills, Andrea Zaragoza, Meredith Shirey, and Andrew Hazlett. Great grandchildren are Robert Minor, Vincent DeSalle, Holly Shirey, Drew, Benjamin, and William Mills, and Ashlyn, Hudson, Adeline, and Marlon Zaragoza. Her husband, Robert, predeceased her in 1957 and her son Robert in 2005.
A memorial service will be held at the Treadwell United Methodist Church in the autumn at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the the United Methodist Church, Treadwell NY, 13846, or to the Treadwell Community Club, c/o Nancy Barnes, 41115 County Hwy 15, Franklin 13775.
Margaret will be remembered by her family, former students, and many friends. Her family wishes to thank the people of Treadwell for their love and many kindnesses over the years.
