Michael grew up in Buffalo, New York where he spent the summer months swimming and working as a lifeguard. He later attended the State University of New York where he met his bride to be, Kathleen, and upon graduation the two of them set off to begin their professional lives as grade school teachers. Michael eventually traded his love for teaching for his true passion as he began his full-time career with the US Army which included assignments in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Washington and eventually the Pentagon. He retired as a Colonel after 27 successful years of military service during which time he earned numerous commendations for his work. Michael’s interest in government service continued after retiring from the military as he pursued a career with the Federal Aviation Administration where he worked tirelessly to help keep our Nation’s air transportation system safe.
Michael renewed his childhood love for the open water later in life where he regularly enjoyed boat and jet ski rides around the waters of Florida, Virginia and most recently NC surrounded by friends and family. He loved the majestic views and peacefulness of Lake Gaston, NC the most. Michael was known by all for his infectious smile, his goofy sense of humor and above all, the love of his family. If you were lucky enough, you could spot him dancing with his grandkids, sneaking off to buy them donuts or Moose Munch, or winning them stuffed animals at amusement parks.
Despite being diagnosed with ALS, he was determined to live his life to the fullest. And he did. His strength and dedication amazed us all. He made it to sporting events to cheer on his grandkids, arranged family vacations, and get-togethers on holidays. He was always thinking about others and especially enjoyed seeing the smiles on his grandkids faces after he picked out the perfect gifts on their birthdays and Christmas. His character really shined through to anyone he came in contact with and even in his most challenging moments, his sense of humor reassured us that ALS would not hold him back from doing what he loved. His drive was unprecedented and he had a heart of gold.
Michael was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen Brown. He is survived by his children, Kristine Brown and Scott Brown and his six grandchildren, Lindsay, Tyler, Ciara, Keira, Kaitlyn and Ryan.
The family will host a private memorial service. Michael’s family cordially invites you to a celebration of Michael’s life, which will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, October 26th at the Aquia Harbour Country Club on Bow Cove. Michael’s family requests that you bring thoughts, prayers and the fondest memories of Michael. A graveside service for both Michael and Kathleen will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Michael’s name to The ALS Association.
