Chester often expressed he wished to be remembered as kind.  He succeeded.  He was a good neighbor and spoke often of how gracious  his neighbors were to him.  He was good natured and kind.
We met when he and Carol became members of Larimer NAMI.  His willing acceptance of becoming our chapter treasurer was a job he held for 17 years.
It was during Carol's life's-end journey we became better acquainted.  Emails from Carol and Chester flew back and forth to many.  Our mundane routine lives became the fodder Chester needed to share with Carol each day in her far-from routine circumstance.
At Carol's funeral her coffin was covered with one of the lovely quilts she had sewn.  This was a compassionate tribute to a wife and mother whose life was well lived.
Chester bubbled with enthusiasm when anticipating Greg's driving him to Lusk for a  high school reunion.  He was so proud of Julie and her work at a local college.  
What brought our unlikely quartet together some years ago was our connection through NAMI years previous.  Our gatherings always centered around food either in a restaurant or in one of our homes.
Angie, a widow, passed away in 2015 just shy of her 93rd year.  Angie was a go-getter, involved in her church and other activities and social outlets.  She loved our little gatherings and often played hostess. Susan, divorced and in her 60's, is quick witted and can always add humor to a situation.  She and Angie had taught the Family to Family classes for NAMI.  I am in my 70's and married to a man who loves spending his retirement at his mountain cabin.  I was our NAMI newsletter/editor for a time.
So here were three Catholic women who always raised a stemmed glass of red to toast our gatherings while Chester, grinning,  raised his water goblet.  The former Baptist theology student would then announce "I just never acquired a taste for it."  He did have a taste for laughter, curiosity, and most importantly a taste for joy.  



 


I was sorry to hear that Chester had died.  He was a really good classmate at OU and  I remember him well.  He will certainly be missed.  Larry Day.

Dear Dalton Family,  
I’ve just read of Chester’s passing in the Lusk Herald online edition.  Please accept my condolences.  Chester and I were boyhood friends, growing up just a block apart in the small, high plains town of Lusk, Wyoming.  Chester and I often walked to school together, and were good friends throughout elementary and high school years.  I hadn’t seen Chester for many years, and we were only briefly reacquainted when Chester attended his NCHS class 60 year reunion in 2016 in Lusk (Chester was in the Class of ‘56, I was in ‘57).  I always appreciated Chester for his fine intellect, his incisive mind, his wit and friendliness.  He will be missed!

I will always remember Chester's smile, laugh and the twinkle in his eyes.  I met Chester through NAMI and a group of us became friends. We did not see each other often, but whenever we got together for meals it was always fun.  Chester was full of wonder and appreciation for the smallest of things.
Chester always spoke fondly and cared deeply for Greg and Julie. He was so proud of both of you!

Here is a fun little story from 2014. One of the friends in our NAMI group was Angie, a tiny spirited woman in her early 90’s. Chester had sent us an email generously offering us to pick the bounty of fruit in his yard.  He said to come whenever it was convenient whether he was home or not.
Angie and I decided to go to his yard one September afternoon to take advantage of his offer. We arrived, rang the bell and looked around. Apparently Chester was not at home.  We had brought some buckets and Angie (thinking ahead) had brought a broom. It was quite a scene watching this 90 plus year old woman whacking apples from Chester's apple trees. I think more squirrel- nibbled & worm-eaten apples fell than good ones! We gathered the good apples and thought, “Oh my! We made such a mess in Chester's yard!"  We went home and I sent Chester an email apologizing for dropping more rotten fruit in his yard. Chester kindly said there were so many apples that had fallen, what we added made no difference.  
 I will always remember Chester as a kind, generous loving soul.  I feel blessed to have known him and wish I had known him better.



Greg and Julie, just a few words about your Dad. We always enjoyed  visiting with him when he was in SoCal, thanks to our mutual friends, Dave and Marsha. Before that, though, we shared many visits together during all the years at Star View. Your Dad and Mom were great helping out with different programs at school. Your Dad always had the biggest smile and the greatest laugh. What a  gift to all!💙💙 R.I.P., dear Chester. Our love and deepest condolences, Bill and Gloria

Chester was like a silent hero. He was always concerned about and showed love to others. He had more empathy than any other man I’ve ever known.  He was always willing to lend a helping hand.  
I am very thankful that we knew Chester and Carol!  They were both very special people. 
They will be and are sorely missed by all!!!

Chester was a dear man.  I met him when he joined NAMI Larimer.  He was on our leadership committee as President and Treasurer.  Chester cared for everyone.  He always was interested in everybody and willing to help were he could.  He loved you Julie and Greg.  Talked highly of both of you.  Chester's smile and giggle will be always remembered by me and the caring wonderful man he was.  So sorry for your loss.

Greg, me and Chester were with bible study since it started and on Saturdays he would come to church and we would sit together. One thing about Chester, when we would have our potluck he would bring the beef and I would bring the south side spice potatoes.  So I will always remember Chester when I make my South Side Spicy Potatoes.  Love Ron

I really enjoyed spending time with Chester in our Life Group.  He had such wisdom to share and we will surely miss him.
