Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday at Gadsden First United Methodist Church for Fred William Sington, Jr., age 82, who passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Rev. Harvey Beck will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.
Mr. Sington was born June 1, 1935 in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of Ramsay High School and received his Bachelors of Business and Masters in Marketing from The University of Alabama where he played football (1953-55, 1958-59). He was named All-SEC Offensive Lineman and Kicker under Coach “Ears” Jennings Whitworth (1953-55) & Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant (1958-59). He later served as Captain of the Gadsden Quarterback Club and on the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame selection committee.
Mr. Sington received a Juris Doctor Degree from Alabama School of Law and a Masters of Labor Law Degree from Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Navy from1953 until 1963.
Mr. Sington was a member of Gadsden First United Methodist Church, serving on the Church Board, and as Lay Leader and Sunday School Teacher.
Throughout the years, Mr. Sington served in many civic capacities, including serving as a member and President of the North Alabama Boy’s and Girl’s Club and the Alabama-Mississippi Area Council. He served as President, Board Member, and founding member of the of the Northeast Alabama Red Elephant Club. Mr. Sington was Vice President of the Gadsden/Etowah Chamber of Commerce, President of the Alabama Retail Association and President of the Alabama Aviation Council, as well as a member of the Alabama Business Hall of Fame Nominating Committee.
Mr. Sington also served as a member and President/Vice President of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association. He was President and member of the Alabama A-Club Alumni Association, President Alabama Etowah County Alumni Association and on the A-Club Leadership Committee, Football Leadership Committee. Mr. Sington was inducted into the Gadsden Etowah Patriots Association Hall of Honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sington, Sr. (Nancy); brothers, David Napier Sington, and Leonard Turner Sington.
Mr. Sington is survived by his Wife of 59 years – Joyce Weatherly Sington; Children: Lee Sington Leleux (Paul), Lafayette, LA, Cheryl Lynn Sington, Ft. Myers, FL, and Fred W. Sington, III (Paula), Cleveland, MS; grandchildren: Weatherlee Baird Stephenson, Tallahassee, FL, Zachary Paul Leleux, Lafayette, LA, Hallye Sington Leleux, Lafayette, LA, Greer Clarkston Leleux, Lafayette, LA, and Sarah Wright, Cleveland, MS; sisters-In-laws: Peggy Sington , Huntsville, AL, and Sharon Sington, Hoover, AL; and nieces and nephews: Leonard T. Sington, Birmingham, AL, Nancy Sington Burton (Rob), Birmingham, AL, Cindy Sington Daily (Jay), Birmingham, AL. and Dee Sington, Huntsville, AL.
Honorary Pall Bearers are Northeast Alabama Red Elephant and A-Club, and the Gadsden Airport Authority Board.
