Hung-Hsi Liu, a beloved husband, father, and cherished friend, passed away on August 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 69. He was born on December 5, 1954, in Taipei, Taiwan, to Sih-Chuen Liu and Ai-Chen (née Kiang) Liu.
Hung-Hsi was the youngest of five children and faced significant challenges early in life. Contracting polio at just 9 months old, he was left with paralysis in one of his legs, but his spirit and determination remained unshaken. Despite this adversity, he walked with a leg brace as a child and went on to achieve remarkable success.
In 1963, Hung-Hsi and his family emigrated to the U.S. to join his father, who was working as a chef in the Washington, D.C. area. The family settled in Maryland, where Hung-Hsi attended Thomas Pyle Junior High School and Walt Whitman High School, graduating in 1971. The Liu family’s restaurant in Langley Park was a cornerstone of their community and a testament to their hard work, providing the Liu children with the means to pursue higher education. Hung-Hsi was particularly proud of earning his degree from the University of Maryland Dental School, graduating in 1981.
For over 35 years, Hung-Hsi practiced dentistry with a passion and dedication that endeared him to many. His patients appreciated his corny dad jokes and uplifting spirit, while his colleagues admired his excellent bedside manner and genuine kindness. Beyond his professional life, he was a mentor in his spiritual community, known for his positive influence and unwavering support.
Hung-Hsi is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Liu and their children, Derek Liu (wife Sarah Liu) and Jasmine Liu. He was a doting grandfather to Ryan Liu and Dylan Liu, who brought immense joy to his life. Hung-Hsi enjoyed traveling with his family and attending concerts, creating cherished memories along the way.
His bright, positive demeanor and ability to spread joy made a profound impact on all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the countless smiles he brought to his patients, family, and friends.
A celebration of Hung-Hsi’s life will be held on October 5th from 1pm to 4pm at Rockville Evangelical Mission Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and family share a story about Hung-Hsi or a silly dad joke in his honor.
Hung-Hsi Liu will be deeply missed, but his warmth and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
