Betty Louise Akers

Betty Nichels Akers, age 86 of Fultondale, passed away Sunday, December 1st, 2013. She was born in Columbia, SC but moved to Alabama at an early age. She was a member of Fultondale First Baptist Church and had retired from Gardendale Parks and Recreation Department. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Ernest Akers; mother, Vera Hall Nichels; sister, Margaret Boone; brother, Lucius Nickels; sister-in-law, June Nichels; and a nephew, Michael Boone. Betty is survived by her loving sons, Larry Akers (Rachel) and Terry Akers (Melanie); grandchildren, Amie, Brandon, Ashley, and Ryan Akers; great grandchildren, Katlyn, Madison, Payton, and Mia Akers; step-granddaughters, Amanda Bento and April Barry; a brother, Tommy Nichels (Pat); and numerous nieces and nephews. Chapel funeral services will be held Thursday, December 5th, at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel at 2 PM with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale. The family wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice, Visiting Angels, and Tiffiani Washington for their care and compassion.
