It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Vokey, age 83 of Glace Bay. Florence died peacefully at the Glace Bay Hospital on May 15, 2020. Born in Birch Grove, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Jane Nicholson.

Florence held a variety of positions with Dominion Steel and Coal and later Cape Breton Development Corporation. She was secretary for the comptroller of Dominion Steel and Coal followed by working at the Dominion Steel and Coal Employment Office. She was also secretary for the superintendent at SNL Railway. Florence worked in the scales and weighing office at the DEVCO Railway Station and receptionist at the DEVCO Coal Prep Plant. Prior to retirement, Florence worked in the finance department for DEVCO at the General Mining Building in Glace Bay. In her younger years, Florence enjoyed bowling and skating with her colleagues at DEVCO. Always up for a challenge, as a retirement activity, she convinced Freeman to take ballroom dancing lessons where they were affectionately referred to as Fred and Ginger. Florence loved spending time with her family and treasured all the special occasions spent together. She also loved spending time with her siblings and always looked forward to visits or shopping trips with them. Florence was a tremendous cook and baker and she loved preparing meals and baking goodies for her family, friends and church events.

Florence was a member of Victoria Presbyterian Church, Birch Grove and following it’s closing, she became a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. Florence was also a member of the Victoria Prebyterian Church Ladies Aid Society.

Florence will be dearly missed by her husband of 53 years, Freeman Vokey, her daughter, Barbara (James Whitters) and son Jeffrey (Corry). Florence is survived by her grandchildren, Haley and Zachary Vokey, Heather, Stephanie and Zachary MacMaster, and great-grandchildren, Talia and Connor MacMaster. Florence is survived by her siblings, Peggy Hummer (Bill), Jean MacInnis, Audrey Burke, Murray Nicholson, sister-in-law Helen Nicholson, brother-in-law Vernon MacDonald and sister-in-law Lavinia Vokey. Florence is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she thought the world of.

Florence was predeceased by siblings Wesley Nicholson, Allen Nicholson, Neila MacRury, Morah MacDonald, Donald Nicholson and Roy Nicholson, brother-in-laws Donnie MacInnis, Dave Burke and Arch MacRury and sister-in-law Beverley Nicholson.

The family would like to thank the staff of 3 West at the Glace Bay Hospital for the wonderful care given to Florence during her illness.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay.

A private interment will take place at Black Brook Cemetery with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. A memorial service to celebrate Florence’s life will take place at a later date.
