Raquel, I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many memories of Awilda. Because of her I became a teacher. She was kind, considerate, funny & nurturing. Awilda taught me many expressions in Spanish that I hadn't learned in all my "book learning" of Spanish. At the end of our first year together at Hillcrest, Awilda told me I should become a teacher because my paycheck would be so much bigger. She gasped when she opened her check because she had forgotten to spread out her pay, so she got a lump sum at the end of the school year. Yup; I wanted that paycheck. Awilda shared her knowledge, her passion for teaching, her love of Puerto Rico & her love for her family. She was a mentor who still influences me today. She will be missed.

I regret not being able to attend the memorial service for you beloved Mom. We are out of state.
I had the great privilege of working with your Mom at School District 21. Her smile, attention to details and commitment to our students truly inspired me. We have lost a wonderful advocate for young children and a leader who has taught all of us well. I believe she is reunited with Sr. Angel and enjoying the best of heavenly Puerto Rican salsa, dancing into eternity. Know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of all of us at District 21's Early Childhood Program.

I learned so much from Awilda when we were working together on the Illinois Early Learning Council. Her warmth of spirit and generosity of heart were ever present. My condolences to the family. Thank you for sharing Awilda with us.
