professional photographer - passed away
Friday July 10, 2020 at the HopeWest Care
Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was
94 years old.
She was born Evelyn Mae Ficklin on May 5,
1926 to Goebel and Osie Ficklin of Delta,
Colorado. Also born at the same time was
Helen Lucille Ficklin, her twin sister. Both
Evelyn and Helen graduated from Delta High
School in 1944. Events of WWII soon took
both girls from the farm to Denver.
On October 7, 1945 Evelyn married Robert
John Kastning in Cedaredge, Colorado.
Robert graduated from Cedaredge High
School in 1935 and went on to serve in the
Army Air Corps through out WWII. Robert
was at Pearl Harbor and served throughout
the war as a gunner on B17’s where he
distinguished himself earning a Silver Star
Medal. Robert remained in the Air Force for
24 years and as a military family he and
Evelyn raised two sons - Roy and Jeff
Kastning. After retiring from the Air Force the
family moved to Denver and Robert
continued with Air Force as a civilian
instructor in photography. As an interesting
side not when Roy enlisted in the Air Force he
was sent to photo school in Denver and
actually had his father as an instructor.
After retiring from the Civil Service, the family
left Denver and moved back to Delta County
building a new home on property owned by
grand parents John and Goldie Kastning.
This was in 1970. After building the house
and settling in Robert and Evelyn opened a
little side business Color West Photography.
The photography studio went on to
photograph a big share of high school
seniors in Delta county, family reunions and
numerous weddings. They became very
skilled portrait and wedding photographers,
and had invaluable assistance from Mary
Frazier of Cedaredge. Roy and Jeff operated
a full service color lab to support the studio.
The house in Eckert sits on Surface Creek
and the yard was beautifully landscaped
offering the finest in outdoor portraiture in the
area.
Evelyn enjoyed photography, fishing, yard
work and landscaping, quilt making and the
occasional trip to Las Vegas with her sister
Helen. Robert passed away in April 25, 1998
and Evelyn just passed away July 10, 2020.
They are survived by their sons Roy and Jeff
Kastning.
