March 17, 1955December 31, 2012

It’s impossible to express the deep sadness for Susie’s passing on Monday, December 31, 2012. Caring, compassionate and full of life, she was the beating heart of our family, until she lost her courageous battle with cancer. Susan E. Moerdyk was born on March 17, 1955 in Grand Rapids to Mary and Jim Moerdyk. She was a beautiful, competitive athlete in high school and went on to win national competitions, in a time when women’s sports were not commonplace. She married Chuck Saur in 1985, and together they raised two sons, Dan and Nick, and a couple great Labradors, Scupper and Moose. Susie’s passion for helping kids with disabilities led to her part in creating a school, in partnership with Aquinas College at the Conductive Learning Center. Her big smiles and fun nature would delight every child. Susie loved her cabin in the U.P., Spartan sports, cruising on the boat, happy hours and her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Moerdyk and many loving aunts and uncles. Susie is survived by her husband, Chuck, and sons, Dan and Nick Saur; brother, Steve (Annie) Moerdyk and nephew Jimmy Moerdyk and niece, Carly (Kia) Obudiyat; sister and best friend, Lori Moerdyk; and a big, loving gang of cousins and other friends. We all miss our Susie. A memorial visitation in celebration of the life of Susie will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. N.E., Grand Rapids. A private family service will be held at 3:00 p.m. The family will host a happy hour in honor of Susie later in the Spring of 2013. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to The Conductive Learning Center Aquinas College, 2428 Burton St. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI, 49546 in memory of Susan Saur.

Hey Moerdyk !! It's Noren !!

Do you know how much you're loved and
missed ?? If the trumpets could sound
they'd be heard 'round the world.
Such a gigantic heartprint you've left on us...

But you, ever selfless, unassuming, passionate about life...compassionate toward all things...
You wouldn't be thinking of how much you are loved--instead you'd think about how much you love.

New Year's Eve has taken on new meaning. It will be a celebration of
you dear Susie.

You have a great husband and two wonderful sons...a fine family and many
friends who miss you desparately.

I'll eat smoked whitefish, cheese and crackers, drink beer and watch as many sunsets as I can in your honor.

Fare thee well...Love, Lisa

Man Girl, I miss you so much! Still can't believe you're not here making everyone laugh and feel better! Know you are making God smile up in heaven. He likes it too!
What fun we had, and what help you gave me when Dave died. You made the world a better place dear Susie, and I'm blessed to have had you in my life. So many others feel the same way; so many miss you. Chuck always said, you were all soul, and that is a perfect description of your big heart

Every New Year's Eve, I remember our all-night snow angel, belly laughing, snot freezing, Bailey's to keep warm, ice skating marathon on Dean Lake. So glad Utube, wasn't around then!

You were the best of all of Girl. I miss you so.

Dear Chuck, Dan and Nick,

My deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to you and all of Susie's family. It's taken me this long to finally write something here--I guess I'm still in shock and feel such sorrow for this loss. Susie was my soul sister. I didn't see her near enough but I'll learn to live with that. Wonderful memories will help me move forward.

I was in a card store right after I heard of Susie's passing. I couldn't read any of them because tears kept welling up in my eyes. I bought a card and messed up filling it out...but here is an excerpt from the sentiment...

"It's not hard to imagine her entering into heaven...what a celebration there must have been, what welcoming applause and warm embraces must have met her as they realized how blessed they'd be with her forever in their midst. She was really something...and we're all going to miss her so."

...I can't hear 38 Special's "Hold On Loosely" without thinking of Susie and smiling...

We had a "favorite" song together-here is the refrain from "Wildflower" by Skylark...

"Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, for she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower
Growing wild."

"Hey Moerdyk !! It's Noren !!
I love you and miss you huge.
