Herbert Jr. Hansel
August 14, 1938 – July 4, 2021
Herbert “Herb” Jr. Hansel, age 82 formerly of Beatrice, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Richard Hansel; brother, Raymond Hansel; and daughter, Denise Hansel. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Mary Hansel; daughter, Rhondeen (Larry) Sluiter; grandchildren Dustin, Joshua, Noelle; great-grandchildren Giovanni and Taylor; and many extended family and friends.
Herb came from a farming background near Rockford, Nebraska. While growing up, he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball at school. Herb proudly served his country for eight years in the United States Army National Guard and Reserves during the Cold War era. He loved many things including hunting, fishing, yardwork, gardening, and often spent time reading books about each of these activities. He also enjoyed cooking and canning foods. Herb deeply loved his family and serving others. He would always offer a helping hand and spent time visiting friends. Herb was also known for his sense of humor, frequently teasing his grandchildren, which was often followed by his “crooked little smile.” Faith was a very important part of Herb’s life. He lived his life by the example of, “with Christ’s salvation, there is eternal life.”
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. In memory of Herb and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.

Oh, we are so sorry to hear of your loss! Herb was a really special guy, to you and your family, but also to everyone he met. He always had a smile and firm handshake. We have fond memories of Herb and Mary from when we first met them in Beatrice. My parents, Marvin and Marilyn Wiens, also send their sympathy, were sad to hear of Herb's passing. But we have comfort in knowing he was ready to be with Jesus, and that the trials and pain in this life have been replaced with eternal joy in heaven! Makes us long for Jesus to come back for all of us! Love and hugs to you Mary and Ronnie and family

• If the measure of a man was to be measured by their handshake, it would have indicated that Herb was a strong man, and he was. I only met him once at a Thanksgiving dinner being hosted by his family; family that clearly believed in sharing their faith and love. A stranger, I was invited in and broke bread with them. Listening to the stories and being part of his family, however briefly, instead of being alone on that day meant the world to me then; it will be a lasting and happy memory for me. His firm handshake told me was strong in life, and actions proved that he was not only strong in faith, but that the love and faith he had was passed on to those around him. I have no doubt the loss of such an amazing man will impact all of his friends and family, and for that I am deeply sorry. But I am very happy to have met Herb, and am confident that he is now living his best heavenly life, a reward for sharing his love and faith in this one. Thank you, Herb for showing your love to me, a stranger.

Sorry for your loss. Always enjoyed a visit with Herb and I know my dad did too. I miss the Hansel reunions we would have when growing up that gave us that opportunity to have those visits with family. Mark and Tammy Meints

Our too-brief friendship began with rhubarb. I asked about yours and soon had a couple of plants for my own yard. I always looked for you on your porch as I walked through the neighborhood, hoping you and Mary would be there. Our conversations covered many topics, and I always left encouraged and smiling. I grieve with Mary and the family in this loss, yet rejoice in the assurance that you are with the Lord Jesus, enjoying all the wonders of heaven. Until we meet again.

Rest in peace dear friend
I will miss you........whether it was a wave from across the street......or a nice long conversation about life........you always had time for me. I will miss seeing you almost every day-I will miss your laugh & smile-I will miss your "a you!" as I came up your driveway-I will miss seeing you & Mary having your evening ice cream together on the front porch in the summertime. And though your time here was over, I know you'll be busy in heaven keeping God's car clean, his generator waxed, & making sure there's not one flake of snow on his driveway in the winter. Thank you for your friendship, you will always be in my heart. I love you..........Alexis (John, Rob, & Tina) ❤

Mary, Bill and I extend our sincere sympathy on the loss of Herb. He was quite a guy. We will miss seeing him working on the yard, his car, etc. He was a very compassionate man and always thought of others. I'll never forget what he did for my daughter. Thankful to have known him.

Oh Herb you will be missed by so many! I remember walking Samson and almost every night we started stopping and talking to Herb and Mary. Samson was so social and loved Herb and Mary. Soon Herb started filling a baggy with mini marshmallows and when he’d see me and Samson walk by he’d get them ready for our return and we’d sit and he’d feed Samson 1 marshmallow at a time. It was the best! Then we got Toby and he was a puppy and so excited for marshmallows and we’d sit in the driveway and Herb would feed Samson and Toby their daily marshmallows! Even months and months after they moved to MI we’d walk by and Samson would go to the door or the garage looking for Herb. 2 years after they moved I said “herb and mary” to Samson and he turned his head, he remembered them! 2 years ago I was hoping to catch up with My old neighbors as we would be in MI and fate happened to place them in NE that same weekend. I really wish we had seen them. My life will forever be different having befriended Herb and I am sending so many hugs and love to Mary! ❤️❤️❤️

Ohhh, so loved Herb and love his beautiful wife Mary! You said it all here, he had a great sense of humor! Even over the last couple of years when coming into church I’d asked him how he was doing and he’d never complain! Loved his hugs!
He will be greatly missed but our lost, heavens gain and he’s no longer in pain!
