Lily M. Mekkes, age 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 after an 11-year battle with cancer while surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Mekkes; and her parents Sebert and Katherine Buwalda. She will be deeply missed by her children Linda (Tim) Patterson, Dan (Tina) Mekkes, and Tim Mekkes; grandchildren Adam, Chad (Brittany), Ashley (Dan), McKinley (Jake), Danielle, Hannah, Grace, Levi; and six great-grandchildren, as well as many extended family and friends.

Lily had a tender and selfless heart with a passion to care for others. This was reflected in her work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the time she was 15 until she retired. As a nurse, Lily met her husband Ken who was also committed to sharing God’s love with others through action. In their time together, Ken and Lily became devoted members of Byron Center Bible Church where they actively served their community. Similar to Ken, Lily had a love for the outdoors and God’s beauty, which she admired until the end. Lily had a gift for providing a safe haven to not only family and friends, but also to strangers. She was the community grandma, mom, friend and sister. Lily will be remembered for her kind and gentle smile, great sense of humor, planting seeds for her Savior Jesus Christ, and of course her raspberry baked goods.

Visitation will be held from 3 - 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Cook Memorial Chapel (East building) 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

In memory of Lily and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Byron Center Bible Church or Mel Trotter Ministries. A special thank you to the Spectrum Health hospice team for the great care and love shown to Lily and the Mekkes family; it was greatly appreciated, and Lily always felt so loved by the team who took care of her.

The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.

Sending my deepest sympathy to the whole family. It was my honor to meet and wait on Lily at Kregel Bookstore over the years. She was always kind and thoughtful. Of course, she was happy to see her granddaughter Hannah work there for a time as well. May God give you peace and comfort in the coming days as you mourn her loss.
