Norma Jean VanderBand, age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ April 3, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Norma was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 54 years, Leon VanderBand; parents, Martin and Tillie Dykstra; sisters Shirley Dykstra and Dorothy DeJonge; and brother, Bob Dykstra.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Steven (Joani) VanderBand, Shirley (Wayne) Hinken, Scott VanderBand; grandchildren Rachel (Joe) Cornelisse, Joshua (Emelie) Hinken, Joel VanderBand, Christopher VanderBand, Chad (Samantha) VanderBand, Jason VanderBand; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Dykstra, sister-in-law, Dorothy Dykstra; sister-in-law, Lorraine VanderBand; several nieces and nephews; and many friends, including special family friend, Ann Croly.
Norma married Leon VanderBand in 1953. She worked for the Kent County Road Commission as a bookkeeper for several years before they moved to Lansing to sub contract for a property management company. After moving back to Grand Rapids, Norma and Lee were owners of L&N Distributing for 30 years, traveling throughout Michigan together, delivering snack foods to various stores.
Boating was a passion for Lee and Norma, starting when the children were young and continuing into their retirement years. Many lasting friendships were formed throughout their years of boating.
Norma will be deeply missed for her kind, encouraging, fun-loving personality, sense of humor, and infectious laugh. Countless memories were made with her family and friends, whom she loved unconditionally.
A celebration of Norma's life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2024, with visitation from 9:30-11 a.m., at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 1933 Tremont Blvd. NW, Grand Rapids, Ml 49504. Pastor Josh Hinken will be officiating. Interment will be at Washington Park Memorial Gardens. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
