Biography

Alta May Moore
Alta May Silas was born on a working Ranch in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma on Monday May 5, 1924 at 2:00 pm to her Mother Callie Jo Isham Silas (36 Years Old) & her Father James Thomas Silas (42 years old). Her Dad was employed on the Ranch as a cowboy. She lived there along with her older brother Floyd Julius Silas until she was 2. They then moved to Mobetee, Texas where her Mom & Dad started a restaurant. This is where she started school. After a couple years they sold that and moved to Pampa and opened up another restaurant. Along about the time the depression started they ended up in Amarillo where bought a house at 1703 Buchanan where her Dad got a job driving a cab, all the while supplementing his income by being a professional poker player. They lived there for 7 years until they bought an apt house on the same street at 1003 Buchanan. She attended Amarillo High School where she caught the eye of the best looking 3 sport athlete named Richard Lazell (Ellie) Raleigh. L. R. (as she changed his initials around) was a year older than her and the romance was on. They were married July 22, 1940. They moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where L.R.’s brother Herman got him a job at the Sante Fe Railroad working on Box Cars. On February 28, 1942 their beautiful baby girl Madeline JoAnn Raleigh was born. Soon after that World War 2 came calling and they moved back to Amarillo with Mom & Dad where Alta and JoAnn lived in an Apartment downstairs and Callie & Tom lived upstairs. L was shipped off to the Navy as a Seabee to the Kwajalein Islands for next 18 months. Alta took a job at Zales Jewelers as office manager, and then for SIC as a debt collector. After 18 months L got to come home for a short stint, but soon was shipped off again. L.R was discharged from the Navy in 1947 where he got a job as a Machinist at the Texaco Refinery. In 1948 they bought their first home at 3511 E. 15th street. On June 26, 1958 our first Grandson James Ricky was born. We became MeMe & Papa. They lived there until 1960 when they bought their second home at 1911 E. Lawndale in Amarillo. On January 2, 1962 their second Grandson Richard Holt was born. On March 28, 1965 their Grand Daughter Sheri Suzanne was born. On April 29, 1969 their third grandson Robert Glen was born. They lived at 1911 E. Lawndale until L’s passing of Cancer 4 days after his 50th Birthday. Alta sold her home in Amarillo and most of her belongings and moved to Grapevine with her Daughter and Grand kids. She found a job as a leasing agent at an apartment house in Grapevine and moved into an apartment. She worked a couple different Apartment Assistant Manager job until she was offered a Managers job at a Large Complex off of Greenville in Dallas.
Alta loved that job and her tenants were wonderful. In May 1976 her Grandson Ricky moved in with her and they just took care of each other while working hard, having fun playing games, and Bowling. In 1981 the Corporate Company offered me a job at DFW Airport managing a Gift Shop in the terminal. Alta took the job and enjoyed it. That is where she caught the eye of an Eastern Airlines Ramp Agent Supervisor named Alvin Moore. They started dating and on September 11, 1984 at the age of 60 they were married. They purchased a home in Azle, and loved travelling all over the world. They bought a travel trailer and every chance they got they travelled all over the country and Canada. Alvin retired in 1987 and they spent time travelling to Holland, England, across the Panama Canal, & Alaska. Alvin was a Master Mason & Alta was in the Eastern Star. Alta served twice as Worthy Matron of the Eastern star. She is an endowed member of the Daylight Scottish Rite. Server as treasurer of the Moose Lodge of Amarillo, and Member of the Woodland Heights Baptist church of Amarillo. In 2003 Alvin got sick with Leukemia so they sold their home in Azle & moved to Bedford to be closer to the kids. Alvin died in 2004. After a couple years a man named Lehman Chambers who was retired from American Airlines and a Master Mason she had met at the Masonic Lodge came calling asking for a date. Alta started dating him and they travelled Across the Panama Canal, Hawaii, and an Alaska Cruise.
Lehman died in 2007 of Heart Complications. She sold her home and moved to the Villages Senior Living on Davis Blvd.
Alta loved being at her apartment and in charge of games. She lived there for 9 years until a fall we knew it was time for some assistance. She moved to Brookdale Assisted Care for a couple years then ended up at Solstice Senior Living in Grapevine. She enjoyed her days playing Bingo, Pokeno, needle point, Crocheting, Cross word puzzles, or watching Football and being on the football pot.
