Yesterday we said “see ya later” to my precious father-in-law, Papa Joe. It would have been his 64th wedding anniversary on earth- but He now celebrates with his beautiful bride, in heaven.
I haven’t known how to post or write about his passing last Wednesday. I met Papa Joe for the first time, when David and I were dating almost eight years ago…yet it’s as if I have known him my whole life. Papa Joe had the gift of making you feel like the most important person in the room. He never met a stranger and his co-workers nicknamed him “nice guy Joe”. He was also known for the wisdom he imparted to his children and others.
There was never a time he greeted me without telling me how beautiful I looked, or commenting on how pretty my outfit or hair was. I would hug him, say thank you and usually laugh Because typically following that, he would
say “when are you going to dump David for me?” Lol 😉 Another one of his many gifts, always making others smile❤️ Regardless of the why, I truly always felt loved and beautiful in his presence.
Papa Joe raised 8 children, often working three jobs at one time during the holidays to buy their Christmas gifts. He lived his life with passion and he loved BIG. One of his many “truisms” that he loved was the quote… “Your child will follow your example not your advice” .
My husband‘s biggest hero Is his Father. I am so thankful that Papa Joe led His children by example. Because of that conviction, I have an amazing husband and father to Ariana.
There are no words that could adequately describe the father, grandfather, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend...Papa Joe was. You had to be on the receiving end of his love to fully comprehend. I’m so thankful that I had the privilege to experience it first-hand.
I love you Papa Joe and I will miss you until the day I see you again in heaven.🤍

Luke 23:43
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Part 1
Joseph Thomas Missimo :
As my Dad would say ... “Firstly” - I would like to thank everyone in attendance, MY BROTHERS and Nephews for their amazing tributes as I know OUR DAD would be very happy ... Finally, I would like to introduce my “STUNT Double” as the odds me getting through this tribute NOT crying is a SOLID 2% !
Let’s begin “as I am going to take it SLOW”
Today we are here to celebrate a man whose legacy is as LONG a his family is BIG ! He unquestionably embodied the essence of being a GR8 father honoring his responsibilities to his wife & children, as Dad without hesitation excelled at these FOUR basic covenants of Fatherhood;
1. “To Provide and protect” ~ Pretty self explanatory... MY dad provided & protected equally for 10 different souls including his partner in life and love ... my amazing MOM❤️.
2. “Role model : Dad truly loved & respected my Mom. One of the greatest gifts a Dad can give his children is the security that comes from seeing their Mom is loved and protected. How my dad treated his wife set the relationship tone of love for the entire home and ultimately taught my brothers how we should respect women. At the same time, my dad was teaching his daughters what they should expect from men.......MY dad’s commitment and consistency is underscored by the fact he was married to my mother for 55 years before she passed away 8 years ago. TODAY is their wedding anniversary ❤️
3. “Dad Loved his children unconditionally”~ By his actions, he ensured every day his children were constantly aware of his love for them. His KIDS were FAR from PERFECT and NEITHER was he, but LOVE is PERFECT, and my dad showed his love as often as he could by always finding the time to make each child feel LOVED... my DAD did this unselfishly for his 8 kids Donna - Denise - Danny - Darlene - David - Dean Dominique and Derek ! ALL D’s ❤️

Part 3
In retrospect ... This nickname for the man known for giving nicknames was perfect as he looked the part and had a great love of life sayings. Dad always saw positives in everything as he embraced and loved this nickname like a glove!! 😊Over the decades, Buddha continued to collect inspiration sayings marking each with a date he heard it ... these were some of his better ones, as many of you in attendance have been on the receiving end of his “quadrupled taped cards he would send in the mail” .. Again - IT MUST BE noted ... SOME of these quotes are original, MOST are borrowed.. but ALL were for HIM to share with those HE LOVED ❤️
Here are some of Budah’s memorable ones ~
7-10-53 ~ (From his father Walter when Dad was age 15) ~
“Whatever you do in life son, never do anything to embarrass the family name”
8-1-65 ~”Blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family”
12-8-58 ~ Again- his Dad to Him .. “It is better to teach your children the roots of labor than to hand them the fruits of yours!”
12-29-81 ~ Dad To Mom on THEIR 25th Anniversary.. “Love is NOT looking into eachother eyes, BUT looking together in the same direction.”
6-23-58~ Birth of his first born ... “Thought I found the love of my life till someone called me dad”
6-24-64 ~ again his Dad to him .. “Life can ONLY be understood backwards, but it MUST be LIVED forward”
11-8-81 ~ On Mom’s 46th Birthday .. “Love is not what we have, it is what WE can give each other!”
9-23-16 ~ To his Grandchildren ..”Life is a mirror... if YOU frown at it ...it frowns back, if YOU 😊 SMILE it returns the GREETING”
1-20-69 ~ The essence of “Real Life Pressure”... “REAL pressure is a man feeding his family of 10 and putting a roof over their heads”
1-30-03 - This was one of his favorites as WE would discuss this☝️alot ... it could be a an original ??... “Son - You only need 3 things in life ... YOUR health, someone to love and to be loved by, and something to look forward to!”

Part 2

4. “Dad was a GIVER... HIS generosity had no BOUNDARIES.... He lived by a CREED “WHENEVER you Give, you NEVER remember.. WHENEVER you RECEIVE you NEVER forget” 🙏... we will cover more of these Buddhism is a few moments ... DAD would offer everything he had, most notably the greatest commodity of all ....Time .... MY dad’s sacrifices were unbelievable, as HE and MOM were the foundation to 8 different success stories. Think about that 🤔?? An equal mix of the joys, struggles, TRIALS, tribulations, and craziness of rearing THEIR children to be THEIR very best & accountable in THEIR pursuits in LIFE. My DAD will quickly let you know he was “THE GR8 PRODUCER”, and his kids became “DIRECTORS” ONLY 😉 having 14 children combined. Obviously- Dad’s love naturally extended to EACH of HIS grandchildren ... the PRIDE & LOVE Dad aka “POPS” had for each ONE was always readily available with pictures in his wallet and lots of stories to be told !!
Now back to the origins of how Dad became known as Buddha ... let’s be clear - Dad earned the name Buddha cause of his increased waistline in the late 80’s.. He later would claim because of his “Devine Wisdom” .. fair enough .. Today he can have it.......HOW it came to life was☝️infamous call by me in the Fall of 1989 from college.... Dad worked the midnight shift (9pm-5am) his entire career as this allowed him to attend to his large family during the day. As a flight dispatcher for AA, Dad worked desk 36 (the Caribbean), I called him that night and his buddy Leon Petite picked up. I simply asked ... “Is Buddha There?”... Mr. Petite replied “Buddha .. Who is Buddha? I said .... You guys know him as “NICE guy Joe” .. tell Buddha his son Derek needs to speak with him ... the rest is history 😊

Our Heavenly Father has called many great men and women home during this year. You were one of the finest. Always extending a welcomed handshake or loving hug, followed by a sincerely compliment. The two that were the glue in the Missimo Family are now reunited. It was our pleasure to know the admirable honest family man, Joe Missimo. See you on the other side our friend.

Oh Mr. Missimo, where do I begin? From the first time I met you at our clinic you were so much more than a patient, you became an instant friend. I always looked forward to seeing you and hearing what you had to say about life or things in general to make me laugh! Hearing you talk about your wife and your family was always so heartwarming! You touched my life like very few people have! I will miss you and your amazing hugs!!! Love you always!

Buddha..so much to say. Whether you were George Clooney or Buddha you were the life of the party. Always welcoming and ready with great stories and occasionally gave out trinkets (I have several still ) that always gave us a laugh. Thank you for including me as a part of your family. Give Pearl and Johnny a big hug from me as you celebrate the beginning of your new journey!
