He was born the oldest son to Georgios and Elefthea Papathanasiou in 1948 in the village of Lofos, Katerini, Greece. George served in the Greek army and also trained with the American army.
George came from Greece to the U.S. like a lot of people, to pursue the American Dream and make a better life for himself. With mistakes made along the way and lessons learned, he would get back up, dust himself off and carry on.
George worked in the transportation industry for over 30 years, exploring most of the country. He did whatever he had to do to provide a place to live and food on the table.
His actions spoke louder than any words have ever been spoken. George was a very proud man and though he may have seldom verbalized it, he showed his love and dedication to his family through his actions. He walked the walk and talked the talk.
George was the type of person that would have given you the shirt off his back, if you asked for it and needed it. He was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever asked, sometimes to the extent of doing without himself. That is one of the most selfless acts a human could ever do for someone.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, one daughter, Sarah, and two grandchildren, Anthony and Mackenzie. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother still residing in Greece.
The family would like to thank all the staff at AuthoraCare Hospice for the caring and kindness that he received. And many thanks for all the helping hands.
Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services of Greensboro is assisting the family during this time.
