A memorial service will be held on Friday March 23 at 11 o’clock at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Memorial gifts are requested to be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family will visit with friends following the service at the church.
Joan Hemphill is survived by her two sons, Lee and his wife Elsbeth of Briarcliff Manor, New York, and Ross and his wife Pamela of Greensboro; and by four grandchildren, Robert, Jennifer, Stephanie, and Will.
A native of England, Joan was privately educated there and served the English government during World War II. During this time she met her future husband who was serving with the 8th and 9th US Air Forces, and later she traveled to the United States as a war bride to join him.
Joan established a new life for herself in North Carolina as a caring wife and mother. She was also a free-thinker, an animal lover, an enthusiastic traveler and a voracious reader. She was active in charitable and artistic affairs and gave financial support to many groups. She believed in supporting local artists by buying their work, and was an active force in Greensboro Opera.
Joan and William were founding co-chairs of the Greensboro Public Library Foundation, and The Hemphill branch Library, which emphasizes arts and literacy, is named in their honor.
Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel is serving the Hemphill family. Online condolences may be expressed through www.haneslineberyfuneralhomes.com
