Jose Aguilar passed peacefully on August 9, 2022 at Legacy Mount Hood Hospital in Gresham, Oregon. Jose was born in the Philippines on October 24, 1931. Known as Joe or Cora by family members, he was fondly called Papa Joe by friends and co-workers. In his almost 91 years of age, he has seen and experienced a world war. One of his favorite childhood stories was when he was bringing food to the family, since the Japanese soldiers were taking all the food that they can, and the Japanese soldiers ran after him and the food, they started shooting at him and he ran in a bamboo forest so he can escape the bullets.
Jose travelled in different parts of the world and a career that ranged from a kid who nailed wooden boxes together, worked in a car plant, construction, foreman in oil rigs to a cook and spent years working in the Middle East. Jose was well loved by his friends. Another story he loved to tell was when he was on barges for the oil rigs, that they eat all these lobsters, fish and shrimp that they caught fresh at the bottom of the barge and they would cook them in steel drums and have a feast. You could see the envy in people’s eyes when he tells this story since it is rare that you eat “freshly” caught seafood.
Jose has lived a very full life. He had a deep faith and relationship with God. He attended daily masses and lived a life that was dedicated to our Lord. He was a loving and devoted husband to his beloved Cleotilde for 56 years, a great Father to his sons Gwinn and Gerard. Jose loved to cook for the family when they came out and visit. His grandsons Kyle and Kevin gave him so much joy. He loved the time that he spent with his first great granddaughter Kayla, she filled his heart with so much happiness.
Jose was a good bowler and loved watching sports. His trips to the store for Lotto tickets were always a treat. He loved his regular visits to the foot spa and his favorite barber shop. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. You will be missed Papa Joe, rest well on your journey.
A funeral service for Jose will be held Friday, September 9, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W Powell Blvd, Gresham, OR 97030.
