Diane Basemore was born to George and Geraldine O’Banion in Detroit, Michigan on August 25, 1944. A resident of Detroit Michigan for her entire life, Diane was educated in the Detroit Public School system and ultimately graduated from Central High School.
She married Forest Basemore Sr in 1965, who preceded her in death. Of this union, two children were born; Forest Jr. and Lee’ah.
She retired from the City of Detroit after 30 years of service. She worked various positions within the City of Detroit starting as a Swimming Pool Attendant at Palmer Park and retired as a Senior Income Tax Investigator.
As a child growing up in the Masonic family of Ancient York Rite Mansons, Diane began her fraternal journey at an early age as a member of the drill team. Over the years, she held multiple positions within the organization including but not limited to Grand Matron of the Heroines of Jericho and then she went to be elected Universal Grand Most Ancient Matron.
Diane was a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. At one point, she was the Chairperson of the Pastor/Parish Relations. She was always willing the serve whenever and wherever needed.
Diane also co-hosted a gospel radio show called TGIF (Today’s God’s Glory Is First) with her long- time friend Phyllis Bell on WMUZ.
She was known by many names. To her children, she was “Ma.” To her grandchildren, she was “Granny.” To her nieces and nephews, she was “Aunt Di” and “Auntie Diane.” To her Masonic Family, she was “Sister Basemore.” Diane was loved by all and projected love to all she encountered. A woman dedicated to family, she left us surrounded by those she loved. She quietly slipped away on May 1, 2021. She leaves to cherish; two children, Forest Jr. and Lee’ah. two Brothers, Richard (Linda) and Michael (Sandra). Two sisters, Bonnie (Allen) and Walthea, who preceded her in death. Four grandchildren, Raymond, Alyssa, Forest Mitchell III, and Marcus. Four Nieces, Andrea (Chico), Denise,who preceded her in death, Yolanda, and Demetria (Craig). Three nephews, Jesse, Michael, and Samuel. Three great nieces, Kenya, Denae (John), and Davonna (Phillip). Four great great nephews, Derrick, Devin, Antonio, and Dylan. Five great great nieces, Dajunique, Tazaria, Ashleey, Tashondra, and Toni. Two great great great nephews, Dallas and Santana. And a host of relatives and friends.
One of her coworkers, Michelle Weston said that “Lady Di was a quiet power who spoke and lived truths. May the God of comfort give you the strength to endure.”
A Graveside service will be held on Saturday May 8th at 11 AM at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit
