Thomas Lawrence Germata

August 24, 1950April 24, 2021

Thomas “Tom” Germata of Wadsworth, IL., born August 24, 1950, passed away on April 24, 2021 surrounded by family and friends in the beautiful home he built by hand and raised his family in. Beloved husband of the late Margaret “Maggie” Germata (nee Bradatsch). Loving father of Daniel (Megan), the late Bradley, and Eric. Dear brother of the late John “Ronnie” Germata, Carol Dumont, the late Michael Hurley (Tina), and Ted Germata (Katie).

Tom grew up in Forest Lake, IL. prior to serving in the U.S. Army (1971-1973) and his marriage to Maggie (1976), eventually settling in Wadsworth in 1989. He worked for decades in the automotive industry before finding a new passion teaching automotive business management courses at the College of Lake County, from which he retired.

Tom enjoyed scouring estate sales while looking for treasures and, of course, stamps to add to his life-long collection. His eclectic taste in music spanned decades and always provided the soundtrack for family parties or relaxing evenings in the back porch. He and his cousin Al Groves even operated their own professional recording studio at one point.

Tom found joy working with his hands, from mechanical repairs and woodworking to raising his bountiful herb and vegetable garden. He was a true outdoor lover and looked forward to summer for music festivals, golfing, road trips, camping, and long walks with his “granddogs.”

Tom was accepting of all people and loved sharing stories about his adventurous life and international travels over a tasty dessert or a shot of Asbach. He always had sage advice to share, such as, “never apologize for things you cannot control.”

Tom, you showed us how to be optimistic through any challenge in life. Your sense of humor, sarcasm, constant smile, and laid back attitude really tied the party together. You will not be forgotten and will be sadly missed, but we find comfort in knowing you have been reunited with Maggie and Brad. “Life is short but sweet for certain.”

So many of my memories with my dad revolve around building or fixing things. He taught me so many things that I’ll never forget. This is one of my favorite pictures, helping him install the kitchen floor in his dream home.

Tom was my cousin and best friend. We grew up together and had too many good times as younger men. I will always treasure our time spent.
