OBITUARY

Beulah Gloria Streeter

July 15, 1932July 24, 2020

With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Beulah Gloria (DeWitt) Streeter, 88, on July 24, 2020, in Halifax, with family at her side. With loving memories, we remember her indomitable will, pride in country, and above all love and joy in her family. In her own words she “was a woman, who lived, loved and cared about her family. Not without faults but tried to do her best.”

Born in Verdun, Quebec on July 15, 1932, Gloria was predeceased by her loving spouse, Reginald Streeter; parents, Robert Hill DeWitt and Beulah Augusta Vincent; brothers Robert, Donald, Russell (Buddy), Wallace (Drew); sister Ruth; and grandson, Timothy. She is survived by her children Robert (Carol), Josiah “Joey” (Jane), Graham (Pamela) and Gail; sister, Noreen; grandchildren, Amy, Sara, Rebekah, Matthew, Andrew, Joshua, Kaleb, Micah; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She attended Verdun High School where she was a member of the debate team and on the cheerleading squad. She graduated in 1949.

Gloria was a career woman and homemaker. Her first full time job right after high school was with Sun Life Assurance Company in Montreal, however upon her marriage she was forced to quit due to company policy regarding married women working. Subsequently she worked at Kellogg’s and Dominion Rubber Co. and then upon her move to Halifax in 1968 with her family joined Maritime Medical Care until her retirement in 1994.

She took considerable joy in her many hobbies that included gardening, quilt making, fine needlework, knitting and crocheting, with family, friends and the IWK Hospital for children being the recipient of many fine pieces. Her beautiful quilts will be family heirlooms for years to come.

Gloria thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas season, during which family (and fellow tenants) visited her apartment to view the many beautiful decorations (many she crafted herself), trees and Dickenson village complete with train and figurines.

Once her children were grown she took an interest in genealogy and spent many hours researching and cataloging both the DeWitt and Streeter families. Gloria reached out to many of the living relatives she uncovered maintaining a connection with them up to her death. Her attention to detail and organization leaves a comprehensive legacy for her family.

Arrangements are under the care of JA Snow Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive, Halifax with a Memorial/Internment Service to be held next year when family can travel and be together safely. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff who cared for “Mother” during her hospital visits, Dr. Mallory and the community cardiac care team for their care and support over the past 18 months, and the staff at The Bradford, Parkland.

So very sorry for the loss of Gloria. She will be dearly missed. She was a woman of dignity and strength and we always enjoyed our time visiting with her. An early memory I have of Gloria is when she and Reg were visiting in Moncton in 1983. A group of us were going out to “Vito’s” for pizza. I, Donna asked if Ron was joining us. I had just met him weeks prior. Gloria noticed the great interest I suddenly had in Ron & teased me accordingly. I guess she knew before I did that there was an attraction there.
Blessings and Prayers!

Gloria was a wonderful mother and mother in law. She was always supportive, loving, kind, thoughtful and caring. She loved us deeply and was always there for us. She was many things to many people but most of all she was ours. She will be missed on so many levels. It is a keen loss that will affect us forever. We love you, Mom.

I am very sorry to learn of Gloria's passing, and extend my sincere sympathy to her family and friends.

Last summer I had the pleasure of chatting with Gloria while helping to plan a get together for former Maritime Medical Care employees. It was very nice to "catch up" with her.

Many fond memories of Gloria and our years at MMC. A lovely lady.
