Giuliana Pizzo, born on February 26, 1932 in Cimpello Italy, passed away on Friday April 19, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband Remo Pizzo. She is survived by her children Ronald Pizzo and Vivian Baydar, their spouses Hélène d’Entremont and Said Baydar, and her grandchildren, Alexander Pizzo, Luca Baydar and Julia Baydar, to whom she was affectionately known as Nonna.
Nonna was a very interesting person. Though kind, loving and warm hearted, she was very clever and never missed a trick. Through my entire life with her, it was nearly impossible to pull the wool over her eyes. She was always able to ‘suss out the truth’ and would never give up until she did, even if it meant months of ‘lying in wait’ to catch, in this case, her children. Like all Italian Nonnas she would cajole you to eat beyond the point of being stuffed, and then tell you that you were fat. I am sure that Machiavelli could have learned a trick or two from her.
Nonna was the bedrock of our family. She left us a legacy of important values. She was hardworking, honest and frugal in regards to spending for herself. She took great joy from the simple pleasures in life like sunrises, blue jays, hummingbirds and her ‘ciclamino’ plants. On the other hand, she spared no expense to come to the aid of her family, always giving more than she ought to have. And she loved her grandchildren unconditionally. Her wish for her grandchildren was happiness in their personal lives, their chosen careers and in themselves. If Nonna had been able to leave final words to her grandchildren she would have said to follow your hearts. She would have encouraged you to be good, honest and to do your very best in all things. She would have wished you all the happiness in the world. And lastly, she would have told you to watch out for shysters along the way, because you are nobody’s fool!
The Family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who provided exceptional care to our mother, including those in the Halifax Infirmary Heart Function Clinic, the Transitional Heart Function Clinic and to all the dedicated and caring staff of units 4.2 and 8.3 of the Halifax Infirmary.
