She is safe and protected, and the family is most grateful and thankful for this of God’s Mercies. Alexandra, or as she was referred to by friends, Lesha or Alex, has three daughters—Natalie, Lilia, and Christine. Alexandra was born in Wolyn, Ukraine. Mom and Tat married in London, England, where they lived and had their first daughter before coming to Canada. They became permanent residents in Hamilton for the rest of their lives where Lilia and Christine were born. Mom’s employment history includes positions which highlighted her various talents to included sewing, baking, and drawing. Mom worked for Arrow shirts for a brief period after which she became employed at Grandma Lees. Her culinary abilities were recognized by her employer who allowed her to take reign of the menu which she oversaw and planned as his confidence in her talent never faltered. Mom was an incredible baker and was recognized for her flare to create the most delectable tortes and pastries.
Mom’s artistic ability was made evident to the Hamilton community when she was profiled in the Hamilton Spectator for her talent of drawing Ukrainian Easter Eggs called Pysanky. She created the most beautiful eggs with themes that reflected the Ukrainian culture in wax and India ink. It was also suggested she consider a business venture to this end. Mom trained as a teacher of the Ukrainian language in the United States. In spite of her remarkable talents, Mom’s humility was so profound; she felt it was boastful and did not want any attention focused on her abilities. Mom led her entire life in this manner. Her Catholic faith was very strong. A few of her favourite phrases were; “You don’t tug on God’s Beard”, in reference to having respect for people, and “The crown doesn’t fall far to the ground”, in reference to the negativity of stubbornness. Mom was proud of what she called her pride and joy—her daughters.
Her life was consumed for their happiness and health and wanted nothing except for them to be safe. Even in the final stages of life she was still fearful of how life would be for her daughters without her. Mom lived her final years at Shalom Village where she was cared for by some wonderful staff. She also had the company of one of her daughters who made it her responsibility to be with Mom. Alexandra knew pure love to the very end of her life. Private Family Service to take place.
