It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Diana Maria Hughes McIlwain on August 17th, 2024, just three days before her 80th birthday. Diana's life was a rich tapestry woven with joy, friendships, and countless moments of laughter. Her generous spirit and boundless love left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Born on August 20th, 1944, in Laredo, TX, Diana's passion for languages was evident from an early age. Fluent in Spanish before she even learned English, she had a natural affinity for connecting with others through language. This passion translated into her career as a dedicated educator, where she taught both Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL) in Harrisburg (John Harris, Camp Curtin) and Derry (Hershey) Townships. Diana had a unique gift for making everyone around her feel special and accomplished, bridging gaps with her warmth and empathy. Whether close or far, she always kept her loved ones near to her heart.
Diana is survived by her sister Becky (Larry), their two sons Thomas (Rhonda) and Daniel, and her three beloved children, Catherine (James), Steve (Carissa), and Cindy, as well as her four cherished grandchildren, Orion (22), Carter (14), Beckett (11), and Leo (9). Her children and grandsons were the absolute light of her life. It’s easy to imagine that the first stories she shared at Heaven’s gates were about them. Grammy will be deeply missed, her love and guidance forever cherished.
As we reflect on her life, we take comfort in knowing that Diana is now at peace, reunited with the many friends and family who went before her. We like to think of her already making new friends and dancing her way into the glories of paradise. Diana’s determination and zest for life were unmatched; there was nothing she couldn’t achieve once she set her mind to it.
A celebration of Diana's life will be held on August 24th from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Civic Club of Harrisburg (612 N Front St, Harrisburg, PA 17101 - additional parking available at the YMCA across the street). Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and enjoy a buffet lunch, with the memorial beginning at 12:30 PM. The gathering will be informal and casual, offering everyone an opportunity to speak about their special memories of Diana.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Diana Mcilwain’s name tied to her long-standing passion for medical science and research. Donations can be made at https://tinyurl.com/32zetsj4.
Diana is now truly in a better place, breathing freely once again. Rest in peace, Diana. You will be forever missed.
