
Fred B. Hockersmith, 78, of Chambersburg, formerly of Naples, FL, passed away on December 31, 2013 in Chambersburg. Fred is survived by his two sons, Robert and Curtis Hockersmith; his sister, Jane H. Yost; and nephews Scott (Jane) and Michael (Susan) Yost.
Born December 7, 1935 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late R. Lee and Mabel (Harrison) Hockersmith of Shippensburg.
Dr. Hockersmith was a graduate of Shippensburg High School Class of 1953 and graduated from Shippensburg University in 1959. He received the M.A. In math from Bowling Green State University in OH and was awarded his PH.D. in psychology from the State University of New York in Buffalo, NY.
Dr. Hockersmith began his education career as a high school math teacher in Quarryville and Camp Hill High School. He later was an instructor and director of the computer center at Edinboro State College. He worked as a computer programmer and graduate assistant while completing his doctoral studies at the State University of New York. Dr. Hockersmith returned to Edinboro as a professor of statistics before joining the Shippensburg University faculty in 1970 as a professor of education and psychology at the college until is retirement on 1997.
