He was born in Blain, PA on May 27, 1936 to the late Lester M. and Nellie B. (Smith) Kern.
Gary was a graduate of Carlisle High School and was married to the love of his life, Judy, for 67 years.
He retired from Carlisle Tire and Wheel after a long career and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement doing
the things he loved: baking cookies, putting together puzzles, going on cruises, volunteering at UPMC
Carlisle and spending time with family and friends. Gary was a gifted carpenter who made many items
for those he loved and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He gave the best
advice and was an awesome husband, father and friend. Gary also served in the National Guards, was a
longtime member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, and a member of the St. Johns Lodge #260.
He is survived by his wife, Judy (Painter) Kern; son Roy A. (wife Michelle) Kern; daughters Lori A.
(husband Mike) Shover and Lisa M. (husband Todd) Prosser; sister Betty Baker; three grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Baby Boy Kern, brother Lester A.
Kern and sister Lois Talley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 30, at 11:00 a.m. at the Carlisle Masonic
Center, located at 1236 Holly Pike, Carlisle, PA. Lunch will be served following the service in the
Masonic Center’s Social Room.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
