- Merle served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Nittany Leathernecks, the Cedars of Lebanon, and the Masons., He also enjoyed woodworking, loved to mow lawns, and enjoyed traveling.
- Along with his parents, Merle is preceded in death by 1 brother and 3 sisters. Surviving are his loving wife, Sally; 3 sons, Douglas and wife Monique, Jeffrey; and Kevin and wife Linda; and 4 grandchildren.
