Robert “Bob” Bucher Muchow, known affectionately as “Butch” in his youth, passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and deep love for family and community.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 16, 1936, Bob grew up in Linthicum and graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1954. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1958. His professional life was devoted to Westinghouse, later Northrop Grumman, where he served as an electrical engineer and project manager. He made significant contributions to radar systems, including the radar component of the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).
In 1967, Bob married Althea “Dolly” Schuette. Together, they raised two sons, Michael and Steven, in Severna Park, Maryland. After Dolly’s passing in 2001, Bob found love again and married Nadja McClain in 2005.
Bob had a lifelong passion for history and travel, which he pursued with enthusiasm and curiosity. He also devoted much of his life to service. As a young man, he was active in the Jaycees, and his dedication to community extended for decades through the Lions Club. He held numerous leadership roles, including serving as District Governor of 22A in 1997, and was honored to be appointed to the Lions Clubs International Board by then-International President Dr. Clement Kusiak.
Bob also gave his time generously to his faith communities, first as a long-time usher at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, and later as an Elder at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. At the time of his passing, he was serving as president of the local chapter of the Torch Club International.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolly, and his brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Nadja; his four sons, Michael, Steven (Laura), Matthew, and Joshua (Heidi); and four cherished grandchildren, Everett, Cadmen, Arline, and Gwendolyn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity closest to Bob’s heart, the Lions Vision Research Foundation, P.O. Box 1714, Baltimore, MD 21203.
