
Born April 18, 1923 in Tyrone, PA, he was the son of the late Cloyd Tyson and Edith May (Stover) Knarr.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, LaVerne Margaretta (Myers) Knarr, sons Lindsay T. Knarr (wife Melinda) of Chambersburg, PA and William M. Knarr, Jr. (wife Marsha) of Tampa, FLA., four grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Eileen A. Ellenberger of Tyrone, PA.
Mr. Knarr was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Chambersburg, PA.
He retired from Westinghouse (Schindler) in 1987, where he was a Senior Engineer. Prior to that, he was employed by Martin Marietta in Baltimore, MD. Although never graduating from college, William did obtain his Professional Engineering License.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the destroyer USS Halligan in the South Pacific.
- Bill had many interests. He was an avid cornet player, starting in high school as a member of the orchestra and marching band. While living in Baltimore, he played with bands at various venues. He played into his eighties as a member of the Apple Core Band and Shippensburg Community Band. His other interests included scouting, archery, hunting, fly fishing, bird watching, gardening, wood working and chip carving. Both he and LaVerne loved to travel, camping throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as traveling to Alaska and throughout Europe. He was a member of the Masons and Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he played Taps as a member of the Funeral Honor Guard.
- Throughout his life, Bill loved to help others. He and LaVerne sponsored five children in need, supported Hospice, Meals on Wheels, migrant workers and performed other volunteer work at the church and Menno Haven.
- A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Menno Village, 2075 Scotland Rd., Chambersburg, PA on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 10:00 AM.
- In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2075 Scotland Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to the Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
