George Marion Baker

September 4, 1921December 2, 2013

Retired Master Sargent George Marion Baker, 92, a resident of Harrisonburg passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at White Birch Estates where he had lived for the past two years.

He was born in Rockingham County September 4, 1921 and was the son of the late Lloyd Jefferson Baker and Ida Bell Davis Baker.

On August 31, 1945 he married the former Helen Shultz, who was the love of his life. Helen preceded him in death on May 15, 2004.

He is survived by a son, John E. Baker of Stanardsville; a sister, Lorena Cosby of Grottoes. Also surviving are Kelly Cosby and his family and Carol Ann Cosby.

George served in the military with the 116th Infantry in Europe from 1942 to 1945. He followed his passion and served with the National Guard as Master Sargent until his retirement September 4, 1981. George was a 50 year member of Harrisonburg BPO Elks #450. He loved the fellowship of his friends at the round table. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Rockingham Union #27, Shriners Club, and St. Stephens UCC. George dedicated his life to God, His country and family.

After retirement George dedicated his time to various organizations, hospice, clothes closet, Salvation Army and different churches throughout the valley with tithing’s and time. George loved to travel and go with bus trips to many places. He loved plays and good food, and evenings at the river with friends. George and Helen also loved going to retirement meetings for the infantry members in various states. They had many friends from the numerous trips who supported him through Helen’s passing. George made many friends and helped so many in his life; it will be hard to fill the shoes of this man who has been through many journeys in life.

He marched his way into heaven. The family would like to thank the support of RMH, White Birch Communities and Hospice; the Members of the Elks, Masons and his lifelong friends for their support.

A graveside service with Masonic rites will be held 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 5, 2013, at the Timberville Cemetery with Rev. Hollis Dodge officiating.

A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Sentara Hospice, c/o RMH Foundation, 2010 Health Campus Dr., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
