Kenneth J. Sperandio

A memorial service for Kenneth J. Sperandio, Sr., SMSgt, USAF (Retired), will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Park. Officiating will be Rev. Dave Fortuna with eulogy given by James Harp.

Poppa passed away on April 22, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; and grandson, Lance Morgan. Surviving him is his son, Kenneth, Jr.; daughters, Linda Sperandio, Janet Morgan and husband Kent, Lisa Harp and husband James and their sons, Dillon and Drake.

Ken served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until retiring in 1970. As a member of Strategic Air Command B-29, B-47, U-2, and B-52 wings his overseas duties were in Korea, North Africa, Newfoundland, Labrador, The Azores, Japan, Bermuda, Okinawa and England. Numerous medals he was awarded include the Air Force Commendation Medal (with 3 oak leaf clusters) and Presidential Unit Citation (with oak leaf cluster).

While stationed at Barksdale AFB he met and married Thelma Stephens, who was his loving and constant inspiration. She accompanied him on seven relocations during the first 15 years of their marriage. Thelma passed away in 2004. Upon retiring from the USAF Ken was employed by the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, retiring in 1989 when he accepted an appointment as the first Surgical Service Administrative Officer at Overton Brooks VAMC, retiring in 1995.

“Each of our children have been a blessing. Many times Thelma and I gave thanks for having such a wonderful son and three wonderful daughters. Our lives were made even more full by two sons-in-law and then three grandsons.

To our friends and neighbors, thank you for your help and encouragement. Now I ask you to pray for my family that they be granted the faith, courage, strength and wisdom they need during the difficult times in their lives.

Most of all, I was thankful for Thelma. She was a remarkable person, a terrific wife, mother, grandmother, and always my best friend. I loved her from the first day we met. She brightened my life without ever asking for anything in return. I regret that we did not meet sooner. Fifty years together were not nearly enough.”
