Benny David Dornak

May 23, 1942April 11, 2020

Benny D. Dornak, a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, passed away on April 11, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada, due to complications from Covid-19. Benny was born on May 23, 1942 in El Campo, Texas, where he attended El Campo High School and Wharton County Junior College before enrolling at St. Edwards University. In 1962, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Air Force Bases throughout the United States and Europe. In 1974 he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. After serving 20 years for his country, he retired in 1982 as a Senior Master Sergeant. His distinguished military career included many accolades and honors, including earning the Bronze Star for his actions in Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict. Following retirement from the Air Force, he applied his flight test operations knowledge and worked as a private contactor for EG&G Special Projects. He later served as the P100 Chief of Operations for JT3 LLC for ten years before retiring after giving 26 years of service to our nation in a civilian capacity.

Benny truly believed in God, country, and family. He was very active with the Boy Scouts, especially with the Mountain Man Rendezvous. He was also active with the Knights of Columbus, becoming a 4th degree knight in 2002. He served in several capacities, including Grand Knight, Membership Director and Trustee, and Color Corp Commander. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was very involved with his family, supporting the many activities and events in which his children and grandchildren participated. His life clearly reflected the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.

Benny is preceded in death by his son Matthew in 2018. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Sandra, his three children, Lisa Dornak Bullen, David Dornak and wife Madalyn, Eric Dornak and wife Julie; and six grandchildren, Maxwell Bullen, Harrison Bullen, Ashley Dornak, Christopher (CJ) Dornak, Alexa Dornak, and Lauren Dornak.

Benny was sworn to valor. His heart knew only virtue. His blade defended the helpless. His might upheld the weak. His words spoke only truth.

Benny was a great man. I loved the support that he gave me as a seminarian and later as a priest. He always gave me and all seminarians support. He loved his country. I’m glad to have met this man who loved and lived his Catholic faith. I will be proud to celebrate his life next Thursday and Friday. Fr. Steve
