Margaret Collins

September 7, 1912June 10, 2018

Margaret L. “Maggie” (Engel) Collins passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018 after 105 years of joyful living. Maggie was born September 7, 1912 to John Aloysius Engel and Ottilia Dietz Engel in south Chicago as one of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents and 4 older brothers. Maggie lived all of her life in Chicago and Michigan, spending the last 62 years in Holland. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Maurice Collins, who preceded her in death in 1994. Maggie had a varied career as a store clerk, doctor’s assistant - helping to deliver babies, secretary, bookkeeper and office manager. She had a sharp mind for numbers and could compute and discuss economics well into her later years. Maggie’s zest for life was evident with her friendships that spanned multiple generations. Her easy-going nature and acceptance of everyone made her easy to love. She had a wonderful sense of humor and would throw her head back when she laughed. She loved a good joke. She also loved cats and all animals. Maggie is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She “adopted” three grandchildren in the early 1980s; they are forever grateful to have had Maggie as their grandmother and in their lives. Surviving her are Karen Bergstrom (Brett Roach), Diane Bergstrom (Steve) Johnson, and Ellen (Todd) Engle and 7 great-grandchildren. Maggie was a truly good, kind, happy person, and will be missed greatly. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 11:00am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Holland, MI. Visitation will be the hour prior to mass on Friday at St. Francis. Burial will take place in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Maggie and Maury were friends of our Branigan family for over 60 years.
Maggie and our Mother "Virginia" were neighbors who spent many wonderful summers together in Holland.

In 2008 I purchased Maggie's home, and it will always be known as "Maggie's Place" to the Branigan family.

When we left Holland last fall she was as loving and funny as always.

That is how we will always remember her.

Maggie was the Office Manager for Radio Station WJBL. where I served as News Director from 1957-1961, Assistant Manager from 1961-1962, and General Manager/Program Director from 1963-1964. As a 26-year-old suddenly propelled into my first management position, it was a daunting experience! But Maggie was wonderful. She was not only exceptionally capable, but she was loyal, loving and kind. She was an invaluable assistant to me during my years at WJBL! My sincere condolences to family and loved ones.
