Charles Joseph Vallely

April 7, 1925December 22, 2012

Charles Joseph Valley of Crestline passed away on December 22nd. A funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, December 26th at 1PM with visitation at 12PM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Charles was born in 1925 and served in the Navy as an officer and a rescue pilot. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Mitchell, in September, 1945. He graduated from Howard College and was employed at South Central Bell for 42 years and retired as a District Traffic Manager. He was a professional tennis player, enjoyed bridge, was a voracious reader, a learner, an artist, a poet, and a writer with many editorial articles published in the Birmingham News. As an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, he was a lector and facilitator for Catholic Charities. Charles was also known as Val, Dad, D-Dad, Papa and GGF (Great grandfather). He was able to engage people, and strangers loved him immediately. He will be missed by so many people because he had an impact on everyone he met. Charles is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Mitchell Vallely; son, Patrick Vallely (Jane) of Rochester, NY; daughter, Liz Von Bergen; three grandchildren, Amy Steel, Patrick Vallely of Boston, MA, and Erik Von Bergen; sister Barbara Carney of Tyler, TX; and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, 35213) or a charity of choice. So sorry for our loss. With my transfer to Bhm in 1985, Val was my District Manager. He was the kindest and most interesting person I've ever known who actually cared about people. I will forever cherish his memory.

Dear Liz and Erik, I was so sad to hear of the loss of your Dad and Grandfather! He was such an amazing person and I feel fortunate to have known him. I really wanted to be there today but due to the weather on Christmas I didn't travel back to Birmingham until today and didn't see the information until it was too late. You and your entire family are in my heart, thoughts and prayers. I love you both so much! Peace be with you...
