Gussie Burton Mills age 101, of Kirkwood by the River passed away the 8th day of March, 2019 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husbands William Jake Freeman and John H Mills. Mrs Mills was born in Clarendon, Texas, November 7, 1917 and moved to Birmingham at an early age. She graduated from Howard College (now Samford University), earning her Master's Degree at the University of Alabama. In addition to serving in many leadership capacities in her church, Mrs. MIlls served as district president of Phi Mu Sorority and in other civic responsibilities . She taught at Robinson Elementary School for 28 years followed by three years at South East Lake Elementary School. Mrs. Mills is survived by her daughter Barbara Freeman Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida; her son John H. MIlls, Jr., (Betty) of Seattle, Wash; grandson Andrew Kennedy (Shauna) of Peachtree City, Ga; granddaughters Louisa Kennedy of Florence, AL; and April Mills (Adam Carlson) of Seattle, Washington; great grandsons Luke Patterson Kennedy of Peachtree City, GA, and Rowan Mills Carlson of Seattle, Washington; sister Iva Jewel Tucker of Birmingham and brother Charles Emory Burton (Dorothy) of Dallas, Texas. Visitation for Mrs. Mills will be at Liberty Park Church on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM followed by the memorial service at 11:00 AM. Officiating the service will be Rev. Randy Overstreet, Dr. Scott Guffin, and Rev. Richard Tucker. Interment will be at Forest Crest Cemetery. May the family suggest that donations be made to Liberty Park Church in Mrs. Mills memory.
