Jeanne Martin Putney, 81, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully at St. Martin’s in the Pines, on Friday, March 22, 2019, with her daughter at her side. Jeanne was born to the late George Joseph and Marie Antoinette Martin on June 20, 1937, and spent her early years in Andover, New Hampshire, before moving to Alabama as a young bride. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Putney Hooker, of Birmingham; her beloved grandchildren, William Patrick Hooker and Emily Jeanne Hooker; her brothers Richard Adrian Martin (Jane) of Salisbury, New Hampshire, and George Michael Martin (Mary) of Chester, New Hampshire; former spouse and good friend William Henry Putney. She was preceded in death by three sons: William Henry Putney, Jr., Christopher Lawson Putney, and Martin Eric Putney; and brother, Alfred George Martin.
Jeanne was one-of-a-kind and will be missed by many. She was beautiful, loving, and fierce. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and bingo. Her family would like to thank her amazing caretakers and nurses in Scruggs House, at St. Martin’s in the Pines, who always treated her with love and dignity.
A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands, 1910 12th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205, with visitation at 1:00 p.m. in the living room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Memory of Jeanne Putney to Hand in Paw, 617 38th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35222, or to St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands.
