Mary Bell Gabriel

September 27, 1950July 17, 2014

Mary Bell Gabriel, age 63, of Birmingham, Alabama, went to be with the Lord peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Walter Gayle and Billye Gayle. She is survived by her loving husband John, daughter Emily Wilder (Jim), son Paul Bell (Brooke), and grandchildren Caroline, Miles, and a baby girl on the way. Mary was born on September 27, 1950, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She graduated from Banks High School and Judson College. As a long time member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Birmingham (First Church), she was admired by her many friends for her kindness, generosity, and loving spirit. A hallmark of Mary’s life was serving and giving to others. Mary volunteered with organizations such as Better Basics and Jefferson County Ombudsman Program. She was also a remarkable quilter, avid gardener, and amazing grandmother. Mary was a trust officer and retired in 2004 from SouthTrust Bank after 20 years. Even as a cancer survivor for the last 10 years and a dialysis patient, she maintained her exceptional sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, Mary may be honored by memorial donations to the American Association of Kidney Patients, or First Church, or by giving blood at the Red Cross. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014, at 2 pm in the Loft of First Church with a reception to follow in the Parlor.

Mary and I were very good friends all the way through elementary school and into high school, when I had to move from Birmingham. We kept in touch and visited during holidays and she was in my wedding December 28, 1968. I had lunch with her 3 years ago and I'm so thankf for that last visit! What an inspiration she was and displayed more courage through her journey than I've ever seen. I just read the sad news today, October 4, of her passing. My heart is aching, remembering all the wonderful times at South East Lake, Banks and East Lake Methodist Church. Thoughts and prayers for all of her family. I will remember my loving, courageous friend forever! I love you, Mary!

John, I'm so sorry to hear about Mary. Mary was a beautiful person inside and out. Enjoyed working with her at SouthTrust and loved to watch the two of you together because the love and respect was so apparent. Will keep you and your family uplifted in my prayers.

I was known to Mary as Ginny Lou. My parents names are Anne and Bob Dunn. My brothers are Robert and Paul. Virginia McLean is my godmother. My family has known Mary since she came to First United Methodist Church in Birmingham. We have always been very fond of her. I babysat Paul when he was an infant and Emily when she was just a few years old. No matter what difficulties in life came her way she moved forward with grace and a smile. She was a beautiful person! My mom, Anne Dunn, died 12/6/13 and I
know she was there to welcome her in to heaven. Love and peace to the family.
