Sherry Gail Traywick
April 16, 1939 – November 28, 2019
Sherry Gail Dover Traywick died on November 28, 2019. She was a 1957 graduate of Hewitt Trussville High School, former Homewood City Councilwoman, long-time member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, business owner, Rotarian, devoted wife, wonderful mother, extraordinary grandmother and loving friend. She was a character that wore many colorful hats, both literally and figuratively.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Donald Traywick who passed away in 2011. She was also preceded by her grandparents, Hillard and Pearl Dover, and her parents, Howard and Florene Dover, all of the Roebuck Plaza community. She is survived by her son Donald Traywick, Jr. (Delaine) of Atlanta, GA, and her daughter Dee Willis (James) of Homewood, AL. She is also survived by three grandchildren, James Aubrey Willis Jr. of Homewood, AL, Carey Galliher (Sean) of Houston, TX, and Erin Willis of Austin, TX. Other survivors include her sister-in-law June Traywick and nephews Quinton Traywick (Donna) and Billy Mack Traywick (Debbie) all of Clanton, AL. The surviving extended family members include many cousins, nephews and nieces from the Traywick, Dover, Wammack and Nation families.
Since moving to Homewood in 1974, she engaged in numerous school, civic and church related activities. She was extremely proud to support both of her children and grandson while they were members of the Homewood High School Patriot Band. Her public service included two terms as a Homewood City Councilwoman (1992-2000) and numerous leadership positions in the Shades Valley Rotary.
The family thanks the doctors and staff in the UAB system, particularly Dr. Stephen Stair and his team. Also, thanks go to Chief Boyd with the Homewood Fire Department for their response to issues and emergencies over the past few years.
The family will receive friends at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church on Monday, December 2, 2019, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. A graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville. Reverend Bill Johnson of Dawson Memorial will officiate.
