Shirley Ann Hagerty, of Lecanto, died at home Wednesday, August 14, 2013, under the care of her family and HPH Hospice. She was born January 19, 1935, in Ocala, to the late P.D. and Cora (Niblack) Nichols of Red Level, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Dunnellon. Shirley graduated from Crystal River High School in 1953, attended FSU, graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1957 and earned her Master of Education from USF in 1981. She married Charles F. Hagerty in 1956, a US Air Force officer and loving husband for 39 years. She taught in Hampton, Virginia, and in Naha, Okinawa in a Quonset hut. Upon her family's return in 1970 she taught at Crystal River Primary School where she retired after 25 years. She was a volunteer at Rock Crusher Elementary, an avid reader, enjoyed travelling, being with her friends and babysitting her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1996. She is survived by her daughters, Dana Nycz (Kaz) of Lake Alfred, Beth Noland (Mike) of Lecanto, and Sandy Stephenson (Jim) of Altamonte Springs; her grandchildren, Reed, Jake, and Josh Noland; her brother, Byron Nichols, of Crystal River; and her nephew, Jeremy Nichols, of Choctaw, Oklahoma.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, Florida, with a celebration of life to follow at 11am. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to HPH Hospice or The Boys and Girls Club of Citrus County.
