OBITUARY

Walter "Jim" James Start Jr.

May 10, 1947September 16, 2019

Walter “Jim” James Start Jr., age 72, of Hope Mills, passed away peacefully at home Monday, September 16, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 10, 1947 in Blythe, California the son of the late Walter James Start and Mildred Denison Start. Also preceding him in death are his sisters, Gail Start and Colleen Whiteside.

He honorably served his country in the United States Navy during Vietnam and retired after a 24 year career as a Chief. In his spare time he enjoyed building model ships, playing cards and board games with friends and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and active in the American Legion. Walter was a man of faith and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed by all.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Vicki Gonzales Start of the home; three sons, David Edward Start and wife Sharon, Walter James Start III and wife Tammy and Timothy Francis Start and wife Amy; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; aunt, Joyce Stockton and husband Carl; and numerous other loving family.

A funeral mass will be held 12 PM, Friday, September 27, 2019 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 5050 Oak St, Hope Mills, NC 28348. The family will receive friends at 11 AM Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Sand Hills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC.
