An illustrious son of Owo Kingdom, Prince Adesegun Olateru-Olagbegi was born in
Owo by the late king of Owo Sir Titus Olateru-Olagbegi and late Olori Adebobola
Olateru-Olagbegi, on May 6, 1951. He had his elementary education in Owo, and attended
Christ School Ado-Ekiti for his high school education.
Immediately out of high school, he worked briefly with the Federal Ministry of Trade in
Lagos for some years. He decided to take his talents to America, where he was stationed in the
state of Utah. Longing to further his education he attended the University of Utah and
graduated with a major in economics. He moved back to Nigeria in 1982 and served his
country at Societte General bank. He was a man of many talents, and with God's favor, he
joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983 and began working as a diplomat for his country.
The year before that is when his legacy really began.
In 1982 he met Funmilayo Obanoyen in Lagos through a good friend. When the late
prince recalled the story of meeting Funmilayo he said that he knew Funmi had to be his wife.
The main thing he wanted from a wife was someone who will take care of him and the kids as
they aged, someone who was loving, caring, and nurturing just like he is. Coincidentaly, Funmi
was a nurse, so he knew he found something good. Funmi told stories of how she wasn’t sure
of Prince at first, she was like how is this guy so sure he wants to be with me for the rest of his
life. Funmi would often joke about the multiple times that Prince would come all the way from
Lagos to Abeokuta to see her and she still wouldn’t give him much attention. The Yoruba term
would be oun se’ shakara. She would joke about how her mom Iya owo, would be the one
entertaining the Prince. Despite all the resistance the prince was steadfast and relentless in his
pursuit for Funmi. Let no man say Hard work doesn't pay off, Funmi was moved by his tenacity,
so she moved with him back to Lagos and God has been in control ever since. They got
married on May 21,1988 and had their first child in the same year.
Because of his line of work Prince traveled a lot, Prince took his wife and children with
him everywhere his work took him. He worked in Australia, Kenya, Mexico, and much more.
The prince was a kind and gentle soul, he was an active man, he loved tennis, table tennis,
and flat out just running. He was the type of man to control the room without saying a word, just
the coolest guy around. The prince was a man of not too many words because he let his
actions speak for him. He would always say “what is worth doing is worth doing well”. Through
his actions he showed everyone the meaning of love, generosity, kindness, and service.
Since the prince retired he and his family have been living in Texas ever since. He has
been a prominent member of RCCG Kings Tower Parish. He served alongside his wife Pastor
Funmi, feeding the homeless, serving them drinks and fellowshipping with them. He has been
a pillar to his family and has set a very strong foundation for his kids. He also set the standards
very high for being a great husband and a father. If he was alive today he would say “just be
good, do what's right, work hard and let God take care of the rest”. God took the Prince to
heaven with his family all around him, there is no better way for a man who was loved so much
to be sent off, surrounded by those he loved until his final breath. So today we say thank you
God for blessing us with such a man, and we celebrate his life in remembrance of him. Long
live the Prince.
