Elsie Landrum Layton

Elsie was born on the 8th of February 1929 and died peacefully at home on Wednesday, the 6th of June 2018.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Tom and her son Tom Jr.; her parents Dr. and Mrs. Herbert T. Hayes, and her sister Elma Wheeler.

Elsie graduated from the Louis S. McGehee School in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she served as Student Body President. She attended Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia for two years before transferring to the University of Texas in order to make debut in New Orleans at a formal tea held in the family home.

While at Sweet Briar College, she was selected to serve as one of the two freshman to act as pages in the May Court. Her sophomore year, she was selected as one of the only two students to represent Sweet Briar for a year of study at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. This study became known as the Junior Year in France Program.

Elsie earned a B.A. Degree from the University of Texas graduating with Honors with majors in French and English. While at the University, she represented the State of Louisiana at the Tyler Rose Festival.

Elsie was a member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church, the Colonial Dames of America Chapter VIII, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lady Washington Chapter, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Junior League, the River Oaks Country Club, the Historic New Orleans Collection, and the Daughters of the Confederacy.

A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 19th of July, in the chapel of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, officiated by the Rev. Bill Denham.

Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Hines Baker Room.

Prior to the services, the family will have gathered for a private interment in the St. Luke’s Memorial Garden.
