November 3, 2023, Elswith Carrere Mazin, 98, of New Orleans, LA, passed away peacefully at home in Houston, TX. Early that morning, the clouds lifted and ushered her to heaven.
Elswith Carrere was born on August 7, 1925, to Carlice and Estelle Carrere in New Orleans, LA. After graduating from Gilbert Academy in 1943, she went on to study at Xavier University of Louisiana earning a degree in Education. Shortly after graduation, she married Rudolph Wilbert Mazin Sr. (Rudy) on June 7, 1947, and to this union, two sons were born, Rudy and Randy.
Through the years, Elswith enjoyed making clothing for herself and her loved ones- from outfits for sons in their younger years to dresses for her granddaughters, cooking for her family, and making friends wherever she went. Family was an integral part of her life, sharing precious moments with those she loved. She was a stranger to no one and found great joy with her beloved dogs. She was authentically and wholeheartedly there for those in her life.
Elswith retired as a Librarian after 30 years of service for New Orleans Public Schools. Her energy was boundless, and she packed so much into her 98 years of life. A woman born with a servant’s heart, Elswith was a person of faith and lived a life serving others. An active and devoted member of St. Raymond Catholic Church in New Orleans, LA, she served as a Lector and a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion at Mass. She was a lifelong member of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary, Court 78 since 1967, the Rosary Prayer group, and later joined the Silver Steppers at St. Monica Catholic Church where her devotion continued after moving to Houston, TX in 2005.
Elswith is now reunited with her husband Rudolph W. Mazin, Sr., sister June Howlett, and parents Carlice and Estelle Carrere who preceded her in death. She is survived by her two sons, Rudy W. Mazin, Jr. and his wife Denise, and Randolph H. Mazin of Houston, TX; five grandchildren, Joshua James of Scottsdale, AZ; Kiesha Mazin, Candice Mazin, and Christopher Mazin of Dallas, TX; Jonah James of Sinton, TX; and sixteen great-grandchildren, Imani, Keitaro, Oshe’, Aliyah, Isaiah, Aniyah, Brandon Jr., Jasmaine, Breyanna, Nathaniel, Dominic, Josiah, Jacoby, Jonah Jr., Jakayla, and Da’Lisa; and one goddaughter Susan Savwoir Reynolds and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
A service for Elswith will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Monica Catholic Church, 8421 W Montgomery Rd, Houston, TX 77088.
